Notes from the connected world

Developments we are watching in Wi-Fi, telecom and smart infrastructure, and what they mean for teams building connected products.

Wi-Fi sensing

Wi-Fi is expanding beyond connectivity

The same radio signals that carry data can detect motion, presence and even breathing. Wi-Fi sensing turns access points that are already installed into sensors for security, elder care and building automation, with no cameras involved.

Our take: sensing is largely a firmware and cloud problem. Device makers who already control their AP software can add it as a new revenue stream without changing hardware.

Wi-Fi 7 & telecom

Swisscom becomes the first Swiss operator to offer a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router

Operators are moving to Wi-Fi 7 home gateways to deliver multi-gigabit speeds to every room and to differentiate their broadband plans.

Our take: new Wi-Fi generations raise the bar for CPE management. Remote provisioning, firmware rollout and diagnostics through an ACS become essential as devices grow more complex.

Smart cities

39 Indian smart cities now offer free public Wi-Fi

India's Smart Cities Mission reported free Wi-Fi services across 39 cities, a sign of how public connectivity is becoming core city infrastructure.

Our take: public Wi-Fi at city scale needs cloud-managed, vendor-neutral networks. Open approaches like OpenWiFi help cities avoid lock-in and keep operating costs under control.
